How Word Counting Works
Word Count Algorithm
Words are counted by splitting text on whitespace characters (spaces, tabs, newlines). Each sequence of non-space characters is counted as one word. This matches how most word processors like Microsoft Word and Google Docs count words.
"well-known" = 1 word
"it's" = 1 word
Character Count Methods
We provide two character counts: with spaces and without. Some platforms like Twitter count spaces, while SMS billing often doesn't. Having both helps you meet any requirement.
With spaces: 11 chars
Without: 10 chars

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you count words in a text?
Words are counted by splitting text on whitespace (spaces, tabs, line breaks). Each continuous string of non-space characters is counted as one word. Hyphenated words like 'well-known' count as one word.
What is keyword density and why does it matter for SEO?
Keyword density is the percentage of times a keyword appears compared to total words. For SEO, keeping target keywords at 1-2% density helps search engines understand your content without appearing spammy. Our tool calculates this automatically.
What's the ideal word count for a blog post?
For SEO, long-form blog posts of 1,500-2,500 words typically rank better because they provide comprehensive coverage. However, the ideal length depends on the topic complexity and user intent.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time is calculated based on the average adult reading speed of 225 words per minute. This provides an estimate of how long it takes to read your content, useful for blogs and articles.
Does character count include spaces?
We provide both counts: total characters (including spaces) and characters without spaces. Different platforms have different requirements—Twitter counts spaces, while some systems don't.
How many characters can I use on Twitter/X?
Twitter/X allows 280 characters per tweet. This includes spaces, punctuation, and emojis. URLs count as 23 characters regardless of length due to Twitter's link shortening.
What's the character limit for Instagram captions?
Instagram captions can be up to 2,200 characters, but only the first 125 characters appear before the 'more' link. For maximum engagement, put your key message in those first 125 characters.
How do I check keyword density for multiple keywords?
Our keyword density analyzer automatically shows the top 10 most frequent words and their density percentages. For specific keyword tracking, look for your target keywords in the table after entering your text.
